"Pain can only feed on pain. Pain cannot feed on joy. It finds it quite indegestible"
Eckhart Tolle
"Of all the things we can feel with our minds and bodies, severe pain is the purest, for it drives everything else from our awareness and focuses us as perfectly as we can ever be focused."
Dean Koontz, Dark Rivers of the Heart

Have you ever noticed that whatever you focus on in your body, the sensation becomes more intense? The same holds true for what you don’t focus on falls away. As you can read on the hypnotherapy page, your unconscious mind filters all the information being received by your body through your senses. It filters out what you don’t feel is important, and it accentuates the information that you do determine to be important. So how does your unconscious mind determine what information you think is important? It is entirely by focus.
So the more you focus on the pain, even if it is something you don’t like, the more your unconscious mind will bring that pain into your conscious awareness. A very powerful aspect of hypnosis is that it allows, and teaches you to narrow, intensify, and control your focus.
Hypnotic pain control is an exceptionally powerful tool for minimizing and eliminating pain, whether it is chronic or acute. Many studies have shown that people can go through surgery with no drugs, using only hypnosis to regulate pain. NYU did a study on women undergoing surgery for breast cancer. The women used hypnosis before and after surgery, and the results were incredible. Not only were the amount of drugs during surgery reduced, it eliminated the need for powerful narcotics after surgery. Another side effect was that the surgeries on the women that did the hypnotherapy averaged 7 minutes less time. How or why that was the case is unknown, just that it was such a significant difference, the study had to recognize and publish it. Another benefit was that the post surgical nausea and discomfort was significantly reduced or eliminated.
Some of the downfalls of painkillers in the form of drugs, is that they are generally addictive, and the more you use them, the more you need to take for them to be effective. Hypnotic pain control is not addictive, it doesn’t have adverse effects on the body, and it doesn’t have the diminishing returns that drugs have, it will be just as strong as you decide to make it.
Dr. John Sarno, M.D. a doctor whose entire career has been centered around releiving back pain, chronic and acute, has found and proven that emotional issues are the leading cause of painin people's bodies.
The point is, because your unconscious mind controls all your sensory data and what you are consciously aware of and feeling, you can reduce and/or eliminate pain from your life in a safe, healthy, effective way with hypnosis. That being said, pain has a place in everyone’s world. Pain is there to let you know when there are problems. For this reason, hypnotic pain control is only performed to the standards set by one’s physician.
